About the Studio
Where tradition meets contemporary expression
Our Practice
This studio emerged from a simple observation: in our accelerated, digital world, people were craving slower, more intentional ways of creating and communicating.
What began as a personal calligraphy practice in a Brooklyn apartment gradually evolved into commissioned work for friends' weddings, then classes, then a full-time dedication to the craft.
Today, we maintain a focused studio practice in Manhattan's Garment District—creating custom lettering work, teaching workshops, and advocating for the continued relevance of hand-drawn typography in contemporary life.
We're not interested in nostalgia for its own sake. This isn't about rejecting modern tools or romanticizing the past. It's about recognizing that some forms of creation benefit from the slower pace, the direct connection between hand and mark that traditional calligraphy requires.
The Artist
The primary hand behind this work came to calligraphy circuitously—through graphic design, through an interest in historical manuscripts, through a personal need for meditative practice that existed outside of screens.
After formal training in traditional copperplate and italic hands, followed by years of experimentation with more contemporary styles, a distinctive approach emerged: honoring classical letterforms while allowing space for personal expression and organic variation.
The work has been featured in regional design publications and exhibited locally. But more meaningfully, it has become part of hundreds of celebrations—weddings, anniversaries, births, memorials—marking the moments that matter most in people's lives.
This is work that takes time. A single invitation suite might require twenty hours from initial consultation to final piece. A large envelope addressing project can span weeks. We've made peace with that pace. The work requires it.
We believe in wabi-sabi—finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. Every piece carries the subtle marks of the human hand: slight inconsistencies in letter height, organic variation in stroke weight, the way ink pools at the end of a line. These aren't flaws to be hidden. They're evidence of presence.
What We Value
Honesty
We're transparent about timeline, pricing, and what's realistically achievable. If we can't do something well, we'll say so.
Craft
We believe in mastering fundamentals while remaining open to innovation. Traditional techniques inform contemporary applications.
Collaboration
The best commissions emerge from genuine conversation between client and artist. Your vision matters as much as our expertise.
Sustainability
We source materials thoughtfully, work with acid-free papers, and maintain relationships with ethical suppliers.
Community
Through workshops and open studio hours, we share knowledge freely. A rising tide lifts all boats.
Presence
This work demands full attention. We resist the pull toward rushed production in favor of mindful creation.
